We’ll start by walking through the streets of Poundbury, past the impressive Iron Age hillfort of Maiden Castle and up on to the South Dorset Ridgeway, where hopefully we should be rewarded with great views. After a snack break, we’ll descend down to the depths of Hell Bottom, which is in fact a beautiful valley, not hellish in the slightest.
Another hill awaits and takes us to our lunch stop looking down through the valley and over Weymouth Bay. Once revived, we’ll head back up on to the Ridgeway before descending down to Martinstown and back to Poundbury.
Booking - No need to book but please check this website beforehand in case of any changes or cancellation. Please contact the leader if you have any questions about the walk.
Parking - parking is free in Poundbury and there should be plenty of on-street parking. There is also an overflow car park at the back of the garden centre.
Toilets - there are no toilets en route, nor at the start/finish. But there are various public toilets in the centre of Dorchester, on the way to Poundbury.
Terrain - it will be mainly good walking paths and hopefully not too overgrown.
Fitness: there are a couple of long uphill sections, but otherwise fairly flattish. We are one of the quicker-walking Dorset groups - our pace is reasonably brisk, with few stops. Please contact walk leader if you have any concerns.
Food & drink - please bring snacks, a packed lunch and plenty to drink in this warmer weather. We will have 2 short snack stops plus a lunch break.
Dogs - No dogs except assistance dogs
Post walk drinks will be at the Duchess of Cornwall, just across the road from our end point.
