Hetton Lyons – South Sharpley
An easy to moderate 5 mile walk starting from the car park for Hetton Lyons Country Park that is accessed on the Hetton Lyons Industrial Estate. The walk is largely on decent paths with not much mud (at least at the time of the recce) and no stiles to climb over. We begin by skirting the west side of Stephenson Lake before turning east for a short distance and then heading south east towards Constitution Hill. There are coutryside views along the route, as we turn north to South Sharpley. It will be a steady but very manageable "rise" to this point, where we begin a gradual downhill route past Great Eppleton, and a busy quarry, towards the Country Park and emerge from woodland to be greeted by Lyons Lake. There is a Cafe here if you want to have a cuppa, or return to the car park for a short drive to Homer Hill Farm Shop, Pittington Rd, DH5 9HG, for a wider menu choice.
Directions from Chester le Street: Take the A183, Chester Road, from the main roundabout under the A1M. After about 1.5 miles up the hill, turn right at the roundabout on to the A1052. Carry on across various roundabouts and under the A690 and on to the B1284 toward Hetton le Hole. As you approach Hetton Lyons on the B1284 (North Road) you will come to a double roundabout at the junction with the A182. Turn right on to the A182 at the first roundabout and then first left at the second roundabout (they are very close together) on to Hetton Lyons Industrial Estate. Carry on up Colliery Lane until you see James Jones Pallets on your left. Take the next left and then sharp right into the car park at the back of NETS.
