At less than 150 metres above sea level, Cambridgeshire’s highest villages may not be mountaintops, but this walk makes the most of their relative elevation with good views. A long path, bordered by poppies and cornflowers in summer, drops down to meet the ancient Icknield Way before heading back up the long, gentle climb to Great Chishill. This is the halfway point, and we will stop for lunch in the Pheasant Inn, which has spacious rear gardens. The second half loops past a bluebell wood and into Essex with the Red Cow pub in Chrishall towards the end. There are toilets in the Pheasant Inn and the Red Cow pub.
