Overview

This is a challenging little walk, which will be taken at an easy walking pace.  Starting from Morebattle, we take a path down the back of the village to cross the Kale Water, then through a stretch of woodland and small fields. We then cross the B6401 and start the steady climb up a farm track to Grubbit Law. At this point we cross the St Cuthbert’s Way and follow a narrow path which drops down slightly, before going through a gate, and following the wall and fence along the ridge to Hownam Law. The last little bit of a climb up to the trig point is across rough ground. We come off Hownam Law via a short, but rough, and slightly steep path, at Grange Hill. We then pick up a farm track that takes us on an undulating route down to Hownam Grange farm. From this point we are on tarmac for circa 1 mile, with a short climb up to the Hownam road and back to Morebattle.  There are stunning views from this walk, particularly from Hownam Law itself, and on the route down.  There is the possibility of cattle at any point on this walk.  It can be quite windy on the hill even on a good day.  Full hill walking gear, strong boots/shoes, walking poles if you use them.  Drink and snacks for two stops.
