Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

A short morning walk taking in the waterways and countryside to the east of the historic town of Ware.

If you're new to Stag Walkers and want a taster of our group walks and the East Herts countryside then this walk is particularly for you! Existing members who fancy a short winter ramble are of course welcome too.

We'll head through residential streets and soon leave town behind as we follow footpaths and tracks through farmland, crossing the Greenwich Meridan - from where all time is measured - along the way. Passing through Watersplace Farm we'll cross over the River Ash and follow its flow as we skirt Easneye Wood, with nice open views, before traversing the river again on the way to the Lea Valley. Taking a well-maintained route known as Amwell Walkway, we'll pass woodland, lakes and nature reserves, heading for a bridge over the River Lea Navigation. The towpath will guide us past Hardmead Lock and many houseboats on the way back to Ware - where there'll be the opportunity for post-walk refreshments at one of the riverside pubs.

Given the time of year it is likely to be muddy so walking boots recommended, plus a change of footwear if planning to visit the pub afterwards.

Dogs are welcome, on a lead.

Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

Please car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
