This 7 mile walk, starting in the village, offers views of interesting, well preserved historic churches, charming old world houses and pubs plus a country walk across the Fens.
The circular walk starts from the parking area adjacent to the historic yet small monastic church, known locally as The Priory. Built around 1100 AD it is a Benedictine alien Priory, an important example of an early Norman church. The nearby parish church succeeds an earlier Saxon foundation and was built circa 1330; the hammerbeam roof was added in 15th century.
From the village, the route follows a former railway track, used to transport farm produce to Cambridge markets. This area has been kept as a nature reserve. Expect to encounter wild flowers, butterflies and birds. The angular course wraps around expansive agricultural fields. There is a stretch of road walking along a farm drove. The Fens provide wide open spaces, which form the backdrop and charm to this route.
The morning walk should finish at approximately 1.30pm. We may view the 2 churches on our return to the parking area in which case, the anticipated finishing time is approximately 2.30pm.
Bring drink/snack for mid-morning break; also for lunch break if staying for church visits after the main walk. There are a number of pubs in Isleham but no toilet facilities along the country route.
