Starting and ending at The Mill PH in Leighton, we explore the sparsely inhabited countryside below and around Little Hill. This is the very quiet and less well known SW corner of The Wrekin Forest. We wander along woodland tracks and paths, bridleways and up and down quiet lanes. On clear days there are outstanding views towards Wenlock Edge, Caer Caradoc, the Lawley and the Long Mynd, Brown Clee and of course The Wrekin. There's a muddy few metres at the bottom of Cherm's Dingle, where stout footwear and poles for balance and depth probing may be a good idea, otherwise mostly good surfaces. We finish with a walk along the lanes around the small settlements of Upper Longwood, Eaton Constantine and Garmaston, passing some fine C17th and C18th farm houses and cottages, before returning to the pub. You may wish to include a visit The Mill PH, a pub here was mentioned in the Domesday book, it has a famous ancient mill wheel inside, the building was featured in a Time Team TV programme.
Please bring a drink and snack. There will not be a packed lunch stop as this is a morning rather than an all day walk, which suits the often wetter and dark days as we approach the shortest day in the year. As the car park is for patrons only, and serves snacks and meals as well as drinks, you may wish to finish your walk with a short stop for a coffee/ drink or pay a longer visit as it offers a meal and light bites menu. There are no stiles or livestock but there is some road walking on narrow lanes and at this time of year it's muddy in places. After the initial walk uphill along the lane from Leighton, there are some long but relatively gentle ascents and descents in a couple of places in the woodlands, but we will avoid the steep path up and down Little Hill.
