Overview

Aylesbury has a newly constructed Greenway footpath / cycleway along the northern perimeter of Aylesbury from Aylesbury Parkway Train Station to the Buckingham Park housing estate, taking in the ruins of St. Peters Church conservation area where there was an Elizabethan village, manor and estate. All tarmac but there could possibly be isolated areas of shallow flooding if following a prolonged wet period.
This walk is very easy access, good for wheel chair users (especially motorised with a good charge bearing in mind the length of the walk). Mainly level, one incline up to the town centre on pavement. The new perimeter path around Berryfields has been completed. Plenty of children's recreation grounds along the way. The St. Peter's Church ruin is interesting, also being next to the site of an old medieval village and manor house. The views from Berryfields are lovely and rural looking out to Quainton and Pitchcott. Great view of the landmark single wind turbine toward Hardwick. A convenient wooded area for anyone caught short about half-way, just before reaching the Buckingham Park Estate. An interesting circuit through old Aylesbury and through St. Mary's church yard, museum, past Prebendal House former home of radical 18th Century MP for Aylesbury John Wilkes, through Market Square, past the old Council Offices and Brutalist 1960s County Office fondly called Pooley's Folly, past Aylesbury Theatre finished in 2009, and finally past the iconic Blue Leanie of 1982 formerly home of Equitable Life. Finally through the Aylesbry train station carpark with views of the Bourg Bridge 0f 2009 for pedestrians to Southcourt (was almost called the Freda Roberts Bridge after a popular councellor but Aylesbury's twin town was chosen instead). Take the train back to Aylesbury Parkway.

Return to Aylesbury Parkway via Chiltern Railways at 56minutes past the hour, bring card for payment.

This walk was originally advertised as a Bookable Fair Weather walk, but the forecast is good so feel free just to turn up or if you prefer to book, you can do so by emailing alan.t.cooper.1@gmail.com or text 07550002345 with a short message with your name and mobile number, mentioning Aylesbury Walk  There will be no charge for this walk but you will need to bring payment for the train journey back to Aylesbury Parkway, standard cost £4.30 and means of payment for any refreshments.
