The old village of Little Amwell forms the northern part of the modern village of Hertford Heath. With an elevated position now obscured by buildings, one of the chain of beacons used to give early warning of the approach of the Spanish Armada in 1588 was on the village green at Little Amwell. Almost all of the village is 90 metres (300 feet) above sea level, with most of the surrounding fields being arable farm land, or cattle and horse grazing.
We will visit the Hertford Heath nature reserve (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Balls Wood nature reserve which jointly cover nearly 200 acres of surrounding countryside and woodland.
Later in the walk we will venture through the grounds of the prestigious college at Haileybury before returning gently uphill through Goldings Wood. We will conclude with the option of well-earned refreshments at The Goat, one of the oldest continuously operating pubs in Hertfordshire.
There is no need to pre-book or contact the leader in advance. If already a Ramblers member, please bring your Ramblers card (or membership details on the app) as we submit a register to Ramblers before we start the walk.
Walkers who are completely new to Ramblers are welcome to attend up to 3 walks prior to joining, after which we will ask that you sign up to become a member.
