This is my second walk leading for Beachy Head Ramblers. On my first, I kept things simple, using paths that many members were already familiar with. This time I aim to take you some places that only a few will have been to before. We start in the car park behind the South Downs Youth Hostel and cross the A26 on a pedestrian bridge before ascending the South Downs Way towards Firle Beacon. Just before reaching the masts we turn right and descend to Norton where it's right again across fields to Foxhole Farm. A track takes us down to the Seaford Road which we cross with care to circle Ouse Valley Nature Reserve. We leave into interesting modern housing then it's left to cross the railway line and the river and along beside the water, behind marine yards to follow the path on the left bank of the River Ouse. There is no path by the river beyond Piddinghoe so we cross the Old Lewes Road and take a detour around Dean's Farm before gaining the path again. Finally, we take the track up to Southease Station, across the level crossing and thence to our starting point.
The Courtyard Cafe is attached to the Youth Hostel where you can also find toilets . Toilets are also available with a short diversion in Newhaven.
A shorter walk (about 6 miles) could also be achieved by returning to Southease station from Newhaven Town. There are trains at 12.00 and 13.00 which stop at Southease.
