This walk is for up to 20 people, including the leader.
An urban walk, on streets and parks on relatively flat surfaces. The purpose is to see a 'Wild in Art' trail of twelve sculptures depicting Snoopy the cartoon dog, perhaps the most well known of Charles M Schulz's 'Peanuts' characters; the sculptures celebrate the 75th anniversary of the comic strip. Please be aware that there will be some busy street crossings, and be responsible for your own safety.
We will start at King's Cross at lunchtime; there are several places within the station where you can get food and snacks (Pret, Starbucks and Leon, for example, and the station has toilet facilities if needed).
We will first head along Euston Road, known as one of the light blue properties in Monopoly, passing the British Library, before turning south and meandering through back streets towards the Square Mile, going through Russell Square and Bloomsbury Square.
As we walk along Chancery Lane, on the boundary of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Borough of Camden, we will join the Snoopy trail. We will then pass through some back alleys near Fleet Street, the original home of print media including the Daily Express; DC Thomson, publishers of the Beano and Dandy comics, also have an office there. Fleet Street is also the location of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, which claims to be the oldest pub in Britain. Other sights include Dr. Johnson's House; his cat Hodge is commemorated in a small sculpture at Gough Square. We will also be able to glimpse the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren.
We will head towards Blackfriars Station, where the Black Friar Pub is distinctive in its architectural style. We will continue through back streets, near to the King's Wardrobe, where the monarch's ceremonial garments were once stored, and pass some historic pubs and YHA St. Paul's (notable for its Venetian architecture) as we approach the Cathedral.
After walking through St. Paul's Churchyard, we will pass the site of the old post office (look out for an old-fashioned green postbox), and past Smithfield, whose notable features include the market buildings (scheduled to close in the near future); St Bartholomew's Hospital, featured in BBC's Sherlock; and the memorial to Sir William Wallace, famous for his role in the war of Scottish Independence, who was executed on this site in 1305. Pye Corner, adjacent to Smithfield, is the location where the Great Fire of London (1666) ended.
We will then head across Holborn Viaduct; look out for the dragon sculptures, which the City of London Corporation repainted circa 2010; we will get to see some temporary murals on a site that is currently under reconstruction. We will leave the Snoopy Trail at Holborn Circus, and will head back to King's Cross, visiting Coram's Fields, St. George's Gardens and Argyle Square on the way. When we get back, there should be time for an optional after walk drink at one of the nearby pubs.
Please note that this walk is not suitable for dogs.
