A walk to include Heage and Sawmills
The walk is 4.7 miles and includes one steady climb in the first mile (Bridle Lane), an ascent from Lower Hartshay to Upper Hartshay. The rest of the walk thereafter is fairly easy going
Parking. Lower Hartshay (Roadside) Near canal bridge. To save time on the day and the grouping of people together to hear the details of the risk assessment, here it is in writing.
Risk assessment Only one road to cross (Heage), busy road take care, good sight lines. The last half mile is on footway in Lower Hartshay on our return to the cars. Take care if crossing. Woodland walking, some paths may be muddy and slippery if wet, take care especially on some of the small ascents and descents along the way. There are a few fields to cross and could be slippery if wet, although most of the route I have avoided the places where there is any deep muddy bits. Warning, exposed tree roots, falling leaves covering the paths could hide tripping hazards. ADVICE. It would seem sensible for me to advise the use of poles or sticks to aid walking and balance on slopes and wooded sections. Some fields have sheep in them so, Dogs on leads please. Coffee, after two and quarter miles, near Heage Windmill with good views over Nether Heage.
