Starting from Marple station we head south into the Goyt valley. Passing the remains of Mellor Mill and the ‘Roman’ Lakes we follow a lane through the woods to Strines. We go through the village and then ascend to the Peak Forest Canal. The canal towpath takes us past the impressive flight of locks at Marple and back to the station.
This is a moderate walk of no more than 6 miles. We pass sites of historical interest, remember The Railway Children and hopefully enjoy views of the surrounding hills.
The walk is for the most part level or undulating, but there is a short steep ascent to the canal. The route uses quiet lanes and tracks as well as the canal towpath, but we do cross a main road at one point.
Refreshments are available in Marple. There are no toilets en route.
