Overview

The walk is largely quite flat. We encountered just one stile but quite a few footpath gates with heavy springs. We start in the town of Melbourne, which was the home of Lord Melbourne, Queen Victoria's first prime minister. We proceed on good roads and tracks and head out into countryside along the route of the former Derby to Ashby railway with good views of the river Trent.  We then join the Trent and Mersey canal towpath to Swarkestone and cross the Swarkestone bridge. Expect more water and mud underfoot as we walk through fields by the causeway. There is more of a climb here as we go up to Stanton by Bridge then gradual undulations through fields as we come back into Melbourne.
