The walk will start from the Visitor Centre that is beside the car park in Eglinton Park and go through the park to take up the country road through Benslie village and to the south entrance of Montgreenan Estate. There, we will walk the old woods and follow Lugton Water to the ruins of Montgreenan Castle/Bishop's Palace, which lie in a loop of the Lugton Water at its confluence with the Cowlinn Burn. We continue to follow Lugton Water then walk up from the woods and onto open farmland then the formal paths and earth tracks of Montgreenan Estate where the old woodland has recently been tended to restore health and provide a blend of landscaping and ancient woods.
The return route is back through Benslie then a different route through Eglinton Park to the visitor centre and car park.
The walk is on a variety of surfaces including fairly rough, natural paths through the woods, an open field, tarmac then a soil, sometimes muddy path through the estate. Good walking shoes or boots are required and poles and gaiters sensible especially if there's been wet weather.
Walk Leader, Iain will be celebrating his 87th birthday on the week of the walk and walkers should be prepared to plot a pub/cafe visit during the walk.
