From Mugdock Country Park Visitor Centre we will walk out past the remains of Craigend Castle and out towards Khyber Car Park. Continuing on, we pass the remains of WW2 gun emplacements and on towards Mugdock Castle for a short break. From there we descend through woodland and pick up the West Highland Way close to Allander Water. Following the WHW, we leave on the outskirts of Milngavie to reach the Mugdock and Craigmaddie Reservoirs. A toilet exists at this stage of the walk. After walking round the periphery of Mugdock Park, we encounter some undulating sections to return into the park and return to the visitor centre.
If the weather on the day is sunny and dry an option exists to lengthen the walk (by about 2.5 miles) in the vicinity of Carbeth, however daylight fades at that date from about 3pm and sunset is reached at 4 o'clock. A cafe will be open at the visitor centre, and we hope to allow drivers to avoid driving as daylight fades.
Hope you can join us.
Meeting Point, Morrison's Car Park, Stevenston. Assemble at 09.20am for a 9.30am departure.
The journey is about 73 miles in total so £10 is requested from each passenger in shared cars.
Each leg of the journey is about 75 minutes so our walk should begin at 10.45am approximately.
There are two route options:
Head for Erskine Bridge, pick up the A82 towards Glasgow for a short distance then pick up the A810 at Duntochar and continue on until passing under overhead electricity power grid and bear left onto the B8050 and continue on to the Baljaffrey Roundabout. From there, head northwards on the A809 towards Carbeth, then prepare to turn left towards Blanefield/Strathblane on the B821. At Blanefield you will reach a junction with the A81, turn right towards Glasgow and drive south for a couple of miles. Mugdock is signposted on your right.
My own preference will be to travel to Glasgow, pass through the Clyde Tunnel and head north through Anniesland Cross joining the A81 and continuing out past the Milngavie Reservoirs and find signs thereafter for Mugdock.
