Hidden in the forestry above the village of Abergynlowyn lie the remains of the Bryn Eglwys slate quarry. Surface workings began here in the early nineteenth century, followed by underground workings in the 1860s. Initially pack horses were used to transport the slate though later the Talyllyn Railway was built for the purpose. At one stage more than 250 people were employed though this had reduced 57 by ww2 and the quarry finally closed in 1948. Our walk heads up to the quarry via the beautiful Nant Gwernol, continuing above the quarry to break out on to the open hillside on the Tarren ridge. After visiting the 460 metre top of Mynydd Rhyd-galed to enjoy extensive views over the Afnn Dyfi and hills beyond, we make our way back to the start on a varied route through the forest.
