Autumn colours on the Ashridge estate - that's what I am hoping for. The ancient oak and beech trees can look spectacular at this time of year. We'll start by crossing Northchurch Common to reach the monument to the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater - champion of the canal network. No longer 'buzzing' with commercial traffic, the Grand Union Canal at Berkhamsted is now a peaceful backwater - as we'll see later in the walk.
Public toilets at the coffee stop at the Ashridge visitor centre. Otherwise 'al fresco'.
If the weather is disappointing, I shall shorten the route, walk briskly and stop only briefly.
