Overview

From the car park we follow the TPT westwards before turning off, then heading uphill to Hartcliffe Hill and views of Langsett Reservoir. It's then downhill to the Barnsley Boundary Walk, which follows the line of the abandoned railway which is set back from the A628.  After just over a mile, it's uphill again, crossing Mossley Road and skirting the southern edge of Penistone until we pass under the TPT and cross the River Don on the old Boulder Bridge at Spring Vale. It's then uphill again on the Penistone Boundary Walk before crossing the A628 and a possible pub stop in the village of Hoylandswaine (see note below).  Hopefully refreshed, a short uphill then downhill section brings us again to the A629 then it's  downhill to the A628 by the railway viaduct. A footpath then takes us across the River Don and then it's a short walk on footpaths and roads back to the start point.  Assuming it's not misty, we should get some great views and 95% of the walk is on footpaths.

Be prepared for a muddy day if we have had heavy rain before the  walk. Toilets in Tesco's at the start of the walk plus the hopeful pub stop. DO NOT park in Tesco carpark as it is limited to 3 hours and there are cameras. Park at the rear of Tesco's in the TPT carpark, go past the entrance to the Tesco carpark and it's about 100 yards further on. On the day of the recce the carpark was busy, but it was market day and it was fine when I finished the walk.  Due to possible limited parking, car sharing advised. There are quite a lot of stiles on this walk, the majority being made of stone, several are in poor  condition, majority are ok for dogs. Pub stop will be late in the walk, will probably have a short stop for lunch to allow for a pub stop. If the car park is full a free car park is available adjacent to the Penistone Picture House on Shrewsbury Road. Turn round and go downhill to the roundabout. Turn right uphill then its  second left, Follow the signs for Town Hall, Penistone Railway Station and free car park.  Car park is on the left after 200 yards.
