Overview

A circular walk around Portland, generally following the route of the South West Coast Path (SWCP), but taking some alternative minor paths, along with a few detours to take in additional points of interest. Lots of fantastic sea views.  Short sections of path may be steep or uneven, and a bit rugged in places.

We meet at the free Masonic car par in Victoria Square, then walk past Portland Castle and up the Merchants Railway incline towards the viewpoint at the North entrance of the Verne Citadel (now the Verne prison). Next we take the top track overlooking the moat towards the High Angle Batteries where the tunnels are now open and it’s possible to explore inside, although a headlamp or torch is advised. On the way we take a detour to follow another of the merchant railway inclines under the road bridges to the Waycroft tunnel, then rejoin the SWCP via King’s Barrow Quarry. From the High Angle Batteries we walk via Nickodemus’s Knob, past the prison, and down over the Grove to the old Easton railway line for a short distance. Next we take the path down to Durdle pier, and then follow the lower path to Church Ope, where we stop to look at the ruins of St. Andrews church and the “Pirates Graveyard”. We will probably take lunch at Church Ope Cove. From there we follow the official SWCP to Portland Bill with it’s three lighthouses and Pulpet rock. Finally we head back up the Westcliff side of Portland, past Blacknor point, before visiting Tout Quarry and the sculpture park, after which we walk down Lankridge towards the seawall, where those that wish to can stop at the Cove House Pub for refreshments, followed by a short stroll back to the cars.

Expect the usual 4050 reasonably brisk pace.
