A ramble of around 5 miles from Quarts Moor car park on the Blackdowns. The circuit takes us along the hill through the woods and diagonally down to the public right of way past Quarts Farm leading to Briscoe. Across fields to Legglands, down Wellington Hill road to Smocks, across fields in front of Oaktree Court. We then take Middle Green Lane under the motorway and over fields to Beacon Lane. From there to Castlefields nature reserve and up steeply through the beech woods to the final ascent to Wellington Monument. From there we take the track to the car park and back by the top road to the carpark at Quarts Moor.
This is a moderate grade walk but remember we are coming down and up the Northern scarp edge of the Blackdowns national landscape.
Possible hazards include:
Low overhead branches, boggy patches, flints in stream path under foot, a short road stretch on Wellington Hill with blind corner, a steep climb on steps to the Monument, fast cars on the top road and junction Hemyock-Wellington road, a dangerous turning out of Quarts carpark in the car because of the speed of traffic on top road.
