Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

A circular walk exploring the countryside to the west of Welwyn Garden City, closely following the route of a former railway line, now a popular walking route, called the Ayot Greenway. This is the first in an occasional series of walks exploring rail trails in our area.

We start by following the course of the disused railway line out of Welwyn Garden City, quickly reaching Sherrardspark Woods, an important oak and hornbeam woodland. We then cross over to the small hamlet of Ayot Green, before rejoining the course of the railway line which used to run between Welwyn and Dunstable. We’ll follow this path to the outskirts of the attractive village of Wheathampstead, where we can visit the restored station platform.

We will stop for a packed lunch break in the village before making our way back towards Welwyn Garden City through a mixture of fields and parkland, including Brocket Park, which offers a splendid view of Brocket Hall over the landscaped Broadwater.

After following a slightly different route back through Sherrardspark Woods, we will finish back at the walk start point, where we will have the option of a pub stop to finish.

Dogs are welcome, on a lead.

Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.

Please car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
