This is a circular walk from Hatfield Peverel going through Little Braxted and Wickham Bishops. Not just a walk through fields and a wood, we will also visit a unique railway feature and there should be the opportunity for a ride on a narrow gauge railway.
The walk starts from Hatfield Peverel Village Hall, which has a cafe (breakfast is served) and toilets. We then mainly use public footpaths across fields, over a golf course and through a wood, with a bit of walking on quiet roads.
We will stop at Braxted Bakery tea room where there is an optional ride on a narrow gauge railway (£2 cash).
The walk ends at the Cross Keys pub, a short walk from the village hall.
Bring: lunch, drink and snacks.
Directions to the Village Hall
By train
Hatfield Peverel has one train an hour in each direction. At the time of writing a train from the Chelmsford direction arrives at 09:42 and from Witham at 09:32, please check beforehand.
The walk from the station car park to the village hall is about 15 minutes. The station car park leads to Station Road, which you follow south over the A12 to reach The Street. Turn left, crossing at the zebra crossing to the junction with Maldon Road opposite the Duke of Wellington. The village hall is on Maldon Road on the right.
By car
There is a large free car park at Hadfelda Square, off The Street near Station Road. From there, walk onto The Street, turn right then follow the train route above to reach the village hall.
You might find a closer on-road parking space but please don't park at the village hall car park as that has limited space.
By bus
Buses from Chelmsford and Colchester directions go along The Street. The 73 from Maldon goes up Maldon Road past the village hall but is very infrequent so you'll be early if you take it.
