From the Village Hall in Ratley Conservation Area, we will descend and leave the village to head south into pleasant Warwickshire countryside. We will pass through pastures and fields to Upton House, where we will have our coffee stop. The 17th C. house is famed for its garden and art collection. We will then head for the Edge Hill escarpment, which is above the site of the 1742 Civil War Battlefield. We will walk along the top of the ridge through woodland before taking a lane to The Castle. This was a folly built in the 1740s , allegedly on the site where Charles I raised his standard, and is now a pub with lovely views over Radway and beyond. This will be our lunch stop. We will then follow the Battlefield Trail back to Ratley.
The walk includes just two climbs, near Ratley, and 5 easy to use stiles.
We may be lucky enough to see a red kite overhead.
Toilets are available at the lunch stop, otherwise rural.
After the walk we could return to the Castle for refreshments.
