Walk is starting from Rhiwderin, just off the A468 near Bassaleg, not far from junction 28 of the M4.We have permission to park in the Community Centre car park and are asked to park at the far left corner near the clothes bank. The administrators have asked me to point out that no responsibility is taken for loss or damage, and car owners park at their own risk. Alternatively, there is roadside parking in Springfield Road, the turning on the left beside the Community Centre.
Some up and down hill, but nothing steep. Total height gain 985 feet. A varied circular walk, on fields, footpaths, in woodland, along a river, and on quiet lanes. Some paths are stony, and mud is likely. Some stiles, mostly in good state of repair but a couple are a little awkward. No toilets but plenty of trees.
The route will take us along part of the Sirhowy Valley Walk, and also on the Rhymney River Circular. The coffee break will be about 3 miles into the walk at Lower Machen Church. The lunch break will be after about another 3 miles at Michaelston-y-Fedw Church.
We hope to enjoy far-reaching views across the Severn estuary at various parts of the walk, and views to Twmbarlwm, visibility-permitting. We may even see some ostriches !
On the history front, we'll stop for refreshments at 2 medieval churches. We'll pass the 16th century pub The Cefn Mably Arms.
We'll get good views of Plas Machen, a medieval manor house which belonged to one of the Morgans of Tredegar.
