This walk offers a chance to do some riverside walking before the Warwickshire flood season arrives again and to explore the Heart of England Forest, founded by the maverick publisher and poet Felix Dennis. The forest is a work in progress, and much of it’s not yet shown on the OS map, but they’ve already planted over 2 million trees.
From the historic town of Bidford-on-Avon we’ll follow the river to reach Dorothy’s Wood where we enter the Heart of England Forest. We’ll follow permissive paths through the forest to reach the Arboretum. We then head into Dorsington and across fields to Welford-on-Avon where we rejoin the river for our return to Bidford. Dorsington and Welford have some of the classic black and white ‘Shakespeare houses’.
The walk is mainly flat and includes riverside paths, woodland, heath, grassland, brooks and some road walking. There’s a bit of overgrowth here and there but nothing major, and a handful of stiles.
Note: despite sharing the same starting point there is only minimal overlap between this walk and Lynn’s walk next week so we hope that you’ll want to do both of them !
There are public toilets at Big Meadow, a few minutes into the walk. There are pubs and cafès in Bidford-on-Avon.
