Following St. Oswald's Way, we head to the Bronze Age site of Lordenshaws, where we can see the remains of hill forts and some excellent examples of early rock art [cup and ring marks] dating from 2000 BC. We then walk onto the Simonside ridge, taking the chance to admire the superb views across Coquetdale and the Cheviot Hills. We end the walk with a descent through woods to the small settlement of Great Tosson (with its 15th-century tower and quaint houses) and follow the bank of the River Coquet into Rothbury.
The terrain is mostly good with paved sections, well-marked paths and simple boulder climbs. A short downhill section through woodland close to the end of the walk is likely to be muddy and slippy underfoot.
Refreshments: There will be a lunch stop en-route and optional post walk refreshments in Rothbury.
