Starting at Shoreham station, the walk goes through picturesque Shoreham village where we will stop briefly at points associated with the artist (who has been described as an "English Van Gogh", I think mainly because he wasn't successful in his own lifetime but appreciated much later). We walk alongside the river , and pass by fields of lavender , before stopping for a drink and snack at Lullingstone Park visitor centre, where there are toilets. Anyone wanting a shorter low level walk could stop here and return the same way, (perhaps visiting the lavender farm shop), but the trail continues up the valley side into woodland, past magnificent ancient trees that the artist loved, and offers lovely views of the valley before descending (a bit steeply) back to Shoreham village.Length of walk is 5.3 miles. (one or maybe 2 stiles)
Anyone who is interested in the artist may like to look at the walk on the website darent-valley.org.uk, and there is an app which is free to download from Google or App store. This gives more details about Samuel Palmer, and there is an audio trail you can use with the actor Robert Bathurst reading his own words. He was very quirky and a bit of a lad as a young man!
There is some parking by the station.
