Overview

From Shardlow we walk across the floodplain of the River Derwent to reach the last footbridge across the river. We then tiptoe past the secret PW Defence ammonition factory to St. Chad's Water LNR for a coffee break before looping back to the footbridge. We then follow the River Derwent towards its confluence with the River Trent and stare in disbelief at the over-the-top replacement of the former Long Horse Bridge. The towpath of the Trent & Mersey Canal brings us back to Shardlow with its marina and scenic old brick warehouses.

The pub will still be closed at the start of the walk. There are no facilities along the route. The walk is totally flat, about half of it follows surfaced tracks, the other half is on meadows which usually have sheep on them. There are five stiles on the walk and we have to cross the Trent & Mersey canal using the lock beams, how exciting. This may make the walk not really suitable for dogs. We should visit the pub after the walk in exchange for the parking.

We use the overflow customer car park of the Clock Warehouse Inn in Shardlow. The overflow car park is to the right of the pub when you enter the driveway off the B5010 London Road, reached by a sharp right turn in front of the pub.
