Overview

Fantastic 5 mile walk full of scenic and historic interest. On a clear day from the top of the Sutherland Monument, a short climb up a small hill, is rewarded by views across England into Wales. We follow the remains of a canal tow path and it basin, the second to be built in the UK and the first in Shropshire and explore the ruins of the lime kilns and quarries it served. On the way we pass many listed buildings in the oldest part of the village. After the walk there is a a chance to sample the homemade burgers and cakes and locally sourced sausages on the picnic benches outside the Hundred Acre Kitchen ( a cafe in a converted shepherd's hut in a field  near Lilleshall.) The walk includes part of the Hutchison Way and the Lilleshall Coronation Walk, )one of the co leaders Anne S  wrote the guidebook so can answer questions you may have about the history of anything you spot on the way.)

Walk includes quiet roads and tracks, a boardwalk bridge over a pool with steps down, and although most of the walk is flat or gentle slopes, it includes an short steep ascent of Lilleshall Hill to the Monument. There are sections where we follow paths across fields (mud after rain can never be ruled out) and woods and the narrow canal tow path section can be overgrown with vegetation at this time of year so poles to bash it down may be a precaution but we'll recce it beforehand and who knows we may have been cleared it (we'll let you know). Please let the leader know if you want to car share. Leader Alan G
