#The SHR Coach Trip is fully booked#
Our 6 mile walk starts from the coach drop off point in the Square. We walk to the old Norman church of St Andrew, soon to enter the disused Hamble airfield where Spitfire pilots trained during WWII. We follow shady paths to Bursledon village, where strawberries were farmed and shipped by train to Covent Garden daily. At the station, we'll view over a profusion of yacht masts to the Jolly Sailor, film set to 'Howard's Way'. Walking alongside the A27, we cross the river Hamble to Swanwick Quay, looking out for Curlews and Sandpipers on a waning tide.
A scenic path meanders, seemingly, in the middle of the river, eventually taking us to Warsash where we stop at the Rising Sun for a roast dinner. This must be pre-booked with gordonshefford@live.co.uk.
Those not lunching can return by the little pink ferry to Hamble Quay for other eateries. The 5 minute crossing cost £2.50 (cash only). We all return to Hamble around 15.00 for free time until pick up at 17.00
Bring plenty of water, hat and sun-screen. Sturdy walking shoes should suffice for this easy walk, no stiles but some tree roots in places.
