St John's Chapel
A moderate, circular walk of 8 miles
We start the walk from the pretty village of St John's Chapel and immediately begin a steady and continuous ascent of 1200ft over 3 miles, crossing fields and moorland onto Newhouse Moor, taking in the picturesque views of Weardale
After the initial ascent, the remainder of the walk is a steady descent, taking us through Cowshill, following The River Wear back to St John's Chapel

Directions to the start point:
Take preferred route from Chester le Street to Lanchester to join the A691
From the A691 at the E end of the village, join the B6296
Follow B6296 for approx 2.5 miles
Turn R onto Longedge Lane and follow for just over 3 miles
Turn R at A68 onto Rowley Bank and immediately L onto Whitehall
After just over 1 mile, keep L for Healeyfield Lane
After approx 5.5 miles, turn L onto B6278
After approx 3 miles (at Stanhope) turn R onto A689 and follow this road for approx 7 miles to St John’s Chapel. The public car park is on your left as you enter the village, just before the Farmer’s Auction Mart
