Overview

From Stanstead Abbotts village car park we’ll walk along the New River to Great Amwell, through the churchyard full of snowdrops. We cross the Lee then into open countryside via Watersplace, then towards Hunsdon with lovely views of the Ash valley. The first three miles will be on firm paths and short stretches of country lanes. Later on there will be two stiles and possibly muddy fields.

Bring a picnic. Brief pub stop (drink only). Optional car share from High Barnet: Victor's Way Car Park, EN5 5TR  What3words: rocks.gain.votes leaving 09:15 (17 miles).

Stanstead Abbotts. A10 to the Chelmsford & Harlow A414 turnoff, follow signs to B181 St. Margarets. Over railway crossing along High Street. Car park 390 yards on left. Charge of £1.50 on a Sunday payable by cash or card (as at January 2026). St Margaret’s station is a five minute walk along High Street.
