Overview

This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.

Join us for an easily accessible evening walk from Stevenage town centre into the countryside around Norton Green and Langley, returning past the ancient burial barrows known as the Six Hills. The route is part-urban and part-rural, exploring woodland, farmland and local history.

We begin next to the modern Stevenage Interchange on what used to be the Great North Road, the main route from London to Edinburgh. From here we follow the shared pedestrian/cycle network to quickly reach the edge of town and pass under the A1(M) to the hamlet of Norton Green, where we can look out for the once-controversial Sunflower House.

We’ll take a tree-lined byway through Norton Green Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest which is home to many birds, butterflies and flowers, then delve further into the wider Knebworth Woods SSSI, following a footpath through mixed woodland. Emerging from the woods into arable farmland, we’ll walk down a gentle slope and along field-edge paths to the edge of Langley. Our route then brings us back past Pigeonswick Cottage and fields of maize before returning under the motorway and into Stevenage once more.

Back in town we’ll take a short detour to see the Six Hills, the largest group of Roman burial mounds in England - a familiar site for centuries alongside the Great North Road, now somewhat enclosed between roads, offices and apartments. We then head back to our start point via an underpass newly painted with murals inspired by the historic mounds.

After the walk there is the chance of a drink at town centre pub The Old Post Office.

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.

Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.

Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.

If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly as you will likely get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.

Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
