THIS WALK HAS BEEN UPDATED SINCE FIRST PUBLISHED. THE START POINT HAS BEEN CHANGED.
From Beach car park (beside Open Air Pool) along shore paths to harbour (toilet). Steep ascent to Harbour Viewpoint on cliffs. On coastal path to Stonehaven War Memorial (likely rest stop). Continue on Coast Path to Dunnottar Castle steps and then to car park (possible toilet). Through Mains of Dunnottar farm, past old radio station and East Newtonleys to A957. Cross this busy, curved road carefully on to footpath and turn left uphill. Into top of Dunnottar Woods (likely lunch stop). Descend through Dunnottar Woods (possible detour on to public road due to timber operations). Return through town to shore and along to start. (passing well-known ice cream shop...!)
A large proportion of this walk is on hard surfaces. The main exceptions to this are the Coast Path (approx 1½ miles) and the paths within the woods. This may influence your choice of footwear on the day.
The wet summer's rampant opportunities for growth have not gone unnoticed by nettles, thistles and whins (gorse). Although this only affects a few parts of the route, it may influence your choice of legwear.
