This walk follows the old towpath that runs alongside the River Gipping between the Suffolk towns of Stowmarket and Needham Market.
We make our way out of Stowmarket following the canal towpath past Muntons Malt factory to the open countryside of the Gipping Valley where the footpath wanders through meadows and woodland to Hawks Mill. The footpath eventually emerges to the very popular Needham Lakes where we can stop for lunch at the Duck and Teapot Cafe. We return to Stowmarket on the same route following the footpath alongside the river Gipping.
Please wear suitable long trousers as the footpaths do have nettles in places.
It is possible to purchase lunch at the Duck and Teapot Cafe of Needham Lakes and there are trains from Needham Market to Stowmarket.
The 8.46 am train leaves Cambridge and arrives into Stowmarket at 9.44 am in time for the walk start time of 10.00 am.
For car drivers, there is Bury Street car park near Stowmarket Station at a cost of £2.50 all day. (Bury Street, Stowmarket, IP14 1HE). But please bear in mind that the car park gets full early. So public transport is advisable.
