Walk – From St Peter’s Metro Station we will visit the recently rejuvenated Sheepfolds Stables. We then proceed across the new footbridge to Keel Square where we will see the first of many statues on the route.
From there we head towards the East End, the Town Moor and some historic buildings of note (especially Trafalgar Square). We then pass the port, fish quay and some early 18th. Century buildings. We take a short break in this area while following the quayside path. Upon reaching the Panns we climb up to Wearmouth Bridge.
We cross the river using the bridge and make our way along the other side to the National Glass Centre through the marina area towards the pier. From here we return via St Peter’s Church dating from 674 A.D. to St Peter’s Metro Station where our walk ends. Walkers may wish to make use of the cafes etc. here on completion of the walk.
Equipment – As the whole walk is on footpaths we suggest strong shoes or boots.
Footnote – If anyone wishes to leave the walk in the Roker beach area, where there are numerous cafes etc. they are quite welcome to do so provided the leaders are informed.
