This walk tells the story of another King Charles, who once fled for his life across what is now a golf course and new housing estates in Sutton Hill, to hide in a hay barn in Madeley. Full of historic and scenic interest, the walk traces what we think were his footsteps. Starting from Sutton Hill Local Centre, we visit the oldest parts of Madeley, follow disused canals and railways past old pit mounds, climb to the scenic viewpoint at the top of the Hay Incline behind Blists Hill Museum, wander through pretty woods, dingles, across a golf course and playing fields, before returning to Sutton Hill. This is one of Telford's very popular 23 new waymarked Coronation Walks. All the Coronation Walks are designed to showcase Telford's fascinating history, local wildlife sites or outstanding local green spaces, or all of these. They were designed by the Friends of the Telford T50 Trail, which includes many Ramblers walk leaders and members, and funded by a grant from Telford & Wrekin Council's Coronation Legacy Fund. This walk is open to all and a good introduction to walking with a group, non members are especially welcome.
Lots of the walk is on quiet roads and pavements. However, there are fields and woodland paths too, which are rough underfoot and may be muddy and slippery after rain, so robust footwear is best. The walk includes one steep uphill climb to the top of the Gorge. Bring a drink and a snack for a short rest stop. Dogs on leads are allowed with the prior permission of the walk leader, please ask if you want to bring your dog. This walk is part of Telford & Wrekin Council's Telford Walk Week and is a joint walk with Friends of The Telford T50 50 Mile Trail.
