From the main car park we head back along the entry road into a wood before we climb up to the top of the village via a footpath and a quiet back road. At the top of the village we carefully cross the A170 Scarborough road and follow a narrow road up a hill to meet a footpath where we cross a field and descend to Ellerburn. We walk past a small church and fish farm on our way into Dalby Forest, where we do a small loop and a climb up the Shoulder of Mutton to a bridleway. We follow this until another bridleway descends back to Ellerburn. From here we backtrack along Thornton Beck, and then on to Thornton le Dale passing the picture postcard 'Beck Isle Cottage'. There are some beautiful views along the route, so it's a good idea to bring a camera!
