Overview

Lace up your boots for an unforgettable 12-mile Dartmoor adventure, weaving together stunning natural beauty, ancient history, and lively folk music! This moderately challenging circular walk, with a total ascent of 645m, promises a truly immersive day out in nature.

Our journey begins in the picturesque village of Belstone. From here, we'll ascend Watchet Hill and step directly onto the vast, untamed expanse of the open moorland. Prepare to be enchanted as we traverse a series of majestic tors – Belstone Tor, Higher Tor, and Oke Tor – each offering breathtaking panoramic views across Dartmoor. Along the way, we'll cross the historic Irishman's Wall, a testament to centuries past.

As we descend through the dramatic Steeperton Gorge, you'll feel truly enveloped by the wild beauty of this landscape. Our path then leads us to Steeperton Tor, followed by Hound Tor and Little Hound Tor, where the granite outcrops create a striking silhouette against the sky. Keep an eye out for ancient wonders throughout our walk, as we'll pass fascinating stone circles, settlements, and stone cist rows, silent reminders of Dartmoor's rich history.

The air will be fresh and invigorating, filled with the scents of the moor. You'll be surrounded by the vibrant purples of heather, the lush greens of ferns, and the gentle bleating of the Dartmoor sheep that freely roam these lands.

Our walk continues across the impressive Cosdon Hill, bringing us to the charming village of South Zeal. Here, a well-deserved break awaits! We'll stop for refreshments and immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the Dartmoor Folk Festival, enjoying the lively music and soaking up the local culture.

Refreshed and re-energized, our final stretch takes us on a delightful return journey along the tranquil River Taw, winding through the enchanting Skaigh Wood before arriving back in Belstone.
