A circular walk of approx 5 miles from Quarr Abbey, based on (though not literally following every single metre of) the “Venerable Oaks Histree” trail.
We meet in the car park and head east from Quarr Abbey, a brief dip into the woods to a squirrel hide, then past the Old Abbey ruins and along Ladies Walk. Across the golf course (take care) and the main road (take more care) into a surprisingly green and wooded area of Binstead. A short drink and snack stop at Millennium Green. Continuing our circular walk via Dame Anthony’s Common, Puckers Copse and its old medieval fishpond, re-crossing the main road and back into Quarr Abbey. There are plenty of woods and trees, and we will hopefully find some of note from the Histree Ttrail. If you’ve not done this walk before (or indeed if you have), I think it’s a surprisingly green hidden gem, despite the main road and residential development of Binstead. Just a nice little walk.
The route is mostly fairly flat, and mostly good surfaces, however it might be wet or muddy in parts in November. There will be some road-walking but less than you might imagine.
Quarr Abbey have kindly allowed our group to use their car park for our walk. Hopefully some of us will visit their lovely café at the end of the walk (great cakes) and there is also a shop and exhibition gallery too, as well as some pigs. What's not to like?
Toilets at Quarr Abbey at the beginning and end of the walk.
TRAVEL
Public transport
Quarr Abbey is served by very regular No 9 buses (every 10 mins) from both Ryde and Newport. The bus stops are right outside the gates. Our meeting point is the car park which is just down the main drive and on the left, clearly signed.
Car
Quarr Abbey have kindly agreed to us using their free car park for the purposes of our walk. But as a matter of courtesy to them, please carshare if you can or consider the bus to minimise our rambler impact on their carp ark as well as on the environment and our busy roads.
Car share
In the interests of the air, parking, and non-drivers, if anyone is able to offer, or needs, a cars hare then please post on WhatsApp group. (To join group please message Serena 07564-811690).
Bring drink, and snack if wished. Cafe available at end of walk.
Depending on the weather, consider suitable, clothing, footwear, walking poles, sun cream, drinks, and food. Walking poles can be particularly useful in winter in helping you to stay upright ! Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker.
Please note that there may be short sections of road walking, so please walk in a single file and take good care.
Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation notices.
Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about
• Any health concerns that you have
• Any emergency contact information
We'd ask you to make sure that we have ready access to this, if needed.
Some people may wish to carry an ICE (in case of emergency) card. We have Ramblers cards for this purpose. Do discuss this subject with your walk leader if it is of interest.
