An immersive experience and serious tree-bathing in the northern part of the Chiltern Hills at its best in Autumn. This walk has been designed specifically to take in the best parts of Wendover Woods and Pavis/Dancersend Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). As well as open farmland, we will be hiking along a variety of enchanting ancient woodlands of beech, oak, ash, maple and beautiful coniferous forest trails which boast stunning views from Boddington Hill, Aston Hill and Haddington Hill into the Aylesbury Vale with views of Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon in the distance. The walk is timed to catch the Autumn colours at its peak, weather permitting.
This is a circular walk, undulating and slightly more challenging in some places, but a really fun walk, with a variety of landscapes. The walk follows mainly good footpaths and bridleways, but does include some hillwalking hiking paths. Be prepared for some uneven terrain as some forestry is currently in force. There are three short ascents that are a bit steep, as Wendover Woods is set on the highest part of the Chilterns. Sure-footedness is required in some places and hiking shoes with ankle support and good grip underfoot are recommended. Hiking poles will be of benefit, as the paths are likely to be not just muddy, but chalky too, which can be slippery on descents, especially after rain. Bring waterproofs, a picnic lunch, a waterproof mat, lots of water, and sustenance along the way as needed. There will be regular stops for refuelling and comfort breaks. Tea room and restrooms at the Tring Natural History Museum. Car park is free. Park along Hastoe Lane or Park Road if car park is full.
