Overview
This is one of the group’s Mince Pie walks, which the leader will bring. We’ll start by heading westwards in the Vale, in parallel with the Downs to our left, passing through Idstone on our way to the attractive village of Bishopstone. Our route from there up to the Ridgeway is one of the most beautiful, taking us up along a coombe and with medieval strip lynchets perched on the hillside ahead of us. We’ll have nearly two miles along the Ridgeway before descending back to Ashbury, with wonderful views over the Vale of White Horse. Bring a drink and snack for the break. All being well, The Rose and Crown pub will be open for lunch for those who would like to eat or just have a drink together (completely optional). The moderate, rather than leisurely, grading of this walk reflects that the route up to the Ridgeway is quite steep. Park considerately in the village, not in the pub car park.
