"They had a very fine day for Box Hill" - Emma, chapter 43
2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, one of the world’s most beloved authors. To celebrate, the Berkshire Walkers will be having a series of walks across the year visiting sites connected with Austen.
Today's walk visits Box Hill, which the characters visit for a disastrous picnic in Emma.
The walk will take us along the top of Box Hill, which offers some fantastic views of the South Downs. Starting at Dorking Deepdene station, we’ll follow the London Road towards the stepping stones, of which we’ll turn right towards them before following the stream to the following roundabout. Here, we’ll take the side road next to the hotel before turning right onto the footpath that takes us uphill towards the side of Box Hill. Once at the top, we’ll then do a loop towards The Thorns before looping back towards the peak of Box Hill, where we’ll then start to make our descent to the same road as earlier, which we’ll follow to our end pint at the station.
Following on from this walk is Michael’s social at Denbies Vineyard, where we’ll be having a tour of the site. Please note, that you’ll need to buy a ticket to attend this event if you’re interested in coming. Because of this social, this walk will be fairly fast paced, and there’ll be no pub at the end of the walk because of the social.
