Join us this Thursday evening for a short figure-of-eight walk in the heart of Cannock Chase featuring some wartime memories.
Our initial circuit takes in the old RAF Hednesford WWII site of grass meadows and birch plantations. It is laid mainly with tarmac and loose gravel, but the paths are flat. We will then pass by the VC for those that wish to take the shorter route and finish here.
Then we will head over the road visit to the old WWI hospital site of Brindley Heath. Lumpy terrain with gradual slopes hereabouts but the relatively short mileage ranks this as an Easy walk.
Local Directions:
From Cannock and Hednesford: Via the A460 Hednesford to Rugeley road. Pass though Hednesford with Aldi on your left, through the lights, and proceed for 0.55 mile to the next lights where straight through and then leave the A460 by turning left 100 yards later, over the railway bridge, then turn right at more lights into Brindley Heath Road.
Follow the course of this road for 1.6 miles up onto the Chase. Latterly, the road flattens out with the large Marquis Drive recreation field visible on your right. Ignore the first right turn here - carry on to take the next acute right turn (with care as it's on a bend) to enter the perimeter road clockwise one-way system. Follow for 300 yards to turn right and park up on the right hand side in the dedicated lay-by area, NOT the VC car park which closes at 7.00pm.
Boot up, walk down the road a little way to turn left and follow the path to the VC.
