Overview

We follow the River Manifold eastwards briefly, then veer to the right over Oldpark Hill to reach the ruins of Throwley Old Hall, dating from the early 1500s. Heading south and then west, we skirt the edge of the village of Calton, and then head northward along the River Hamps, and the slopes on the west side of the valley, back to the start.

- There are at least 8 stiles on the route.

- Some may find poles useful on the last 300m or so of the walk, as the descent through Weag's Barn nature reserve, from grid ref 098539 ( ///driftwood.corrosive.down ) to the Weag's Bridge car park, is quite steep. The alternative is to go round by the road.

- We met a lot of livestock on the recce, including some cows with calves. Some of the cattle were being moved around from one field to another, presumably to follow the best grazing, so it will be a matter of luck whether any given field has cows in it when we pass through. We will do our best to give them a wide berth.
