The Cambridge Ramblers Group plan to follow the middle stretch of the West Anglia Way, walking one section a month between June and November. Today's section of the station to station walk passes through the gently rolling countryside of north-west Essex, mainly on good paths and quiet country roads. Starting from Newport and ending at Bishop's Stortford the whole walk is approximately 11 miles, with shorter option of 7 miles by getting the train from Stansted Mountfitchet back to Newport or Cambridge/other stations.
Bring rations for mid-morning and lunch stops.
There are toilets at Cambridge and Bishops Stortford train stations, as well as on the trains. None at Newport or Stansted Mountfitchet stations. There is a large car park at Newport station (£4.40 Saturday charge) or street parking nearby.
Depending on our progress, those wishing to leave at Stansted Mountfitchet could catch either the 13:17 or 14:17 train to Newport/Cambridge, while those continuing to Bishops Stortford would catch either the 16:13 or 17:13 train back to Newport/Cambridge, also the 16:38 to Cambridge.
After periods of wet weather several sections of footpath are likely to be muddy.
Note 1: As the walk relies on returning to Newport/other stations by train from Bishops Stortford, closer to the walk date please check train journey information in case there is disruption to the service that weekend; this also applies if planning to get to Newport station by train, eg from Cambridge/other stations on the Liverpool Street Line.
Note 2: Due to current spells of very hot weather it is important to recheck the website within 24 hours of the walk in case the walk has been cancelled (which is likely to happen when the weather forecast for the walk date exceeds 30 degrees).
