An afternoon walk of just under five miles starting from Stevenage Old Town, heading through the suburbs and into the countryside, taking in some urban art along the way. The route is relatively flat, partly on rural tracks and partly on surfaced paths.
The walk follows on from our late morning ‘Annual Get-together of Members’ and lunch social at Cinnabar in Stevenage High Street (please see our separate event pages if you wish to join us at Cinnabar). We hope you can join us for the whole day but if you can’t make it earlier then feel free to come along just for the walk after lunch.
On the walk you can meet the new Stag Walkers committee for 2025-26 who will be elected by members at our morning meeting.
The route begins along a section of Stevenage’s walking/cycling network, taking us through a series of underpasses and past some cute statues of a robot family. After passing through the 1970s neighbourhood of Symonds Green, across its common and past its pond, we’ll walk underneath the A1(M) and into the countryside.
We’ll loop around arable fields and along tree-lined paths with a wide view over the Langley valley. Depending on weather and timing, we might catch the sunset before again passing below the motorway and back to town.
On our return stretch through Stevenage we’ll pass Meadway Playing Field then rejoin the extensive cycle-path network, taking us through some underpasses recently painted with colourful murals. Coming back into the Old Town at dusk we have the option of finishing with drinks at a local pub before heading home.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
There is no limit on group size for this walk but we do find it helpful to know who's coming so:
* if you plan to come along, please book a place for yourself and any guests you are bringing
* if you have to cancel please update your RSVP so we know not to wait for you
* you can RSVP via our Meetup group or e-mail stagwalkers at gmail dot com
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
This is a circular walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
We are a Ramblers group, non-members are welcome to try us out for three free walks before joining Ramblers as a full member.
As a charity we ask that non-members consider making a voluntary donation to Ramblers until they purchase membership. We suggest £3-4 per walk. You can donate in person or online.
