This is a scenic 5.5 mile circular walk which includes a beautiful water fall trail and riverside walking.
The walk will begin opposite Weardale Holiday home caravan site. There are a few parking spaces directly opposite Weardale Holiday home caravan site. There is also a small car park down a narrow lane next to the Hare and Hound pub and along over bridge for 50 yards in the direction of Brotherlee. Considerate parking is also permitted within west gate village.
There are no public toilets in Westgate. There are public toilets at Daddryshield which is about 1 mile west of Westgate and at ST Johns Chapel which is 2 miles west of Westgate.
The first part of the walk is a steady uphill easy incline as we pass a number of beautiful water falls until we reach the remains of Slitt Mine. We continue walking upwards where some of the paths are single file only.
After around one mile of walking we cross a small stream , which leads us to a rocky /mixed terrain pathway with a medium incline for around 150 metres. Good walking boots/walking shoes recommended as it can be a bit tough underfoot as the terrain is quite mixed. If you have sticks then these will be useful especially if there has been recent rain showers.
The second part of the walk is mainly downhill but not a harsh decline. We walk along another rocky / mixed terrain country lane with great vista views until we reach a quiet country road .
We then proceed down the road making our way back down towards St John’s . We then follow a Beautiful riverside trail through daddy shield to Westgate .
There are a few kissing gates and one stile on the walk.
