Overview

This is a walk from Goathland Car Park YO232 5LX . Distance 10.3 miles. Ascent approx 1200ft .

Starting from the car park we walk along the old railway track to Moorgates. From there we have a little road walking before we reach the path up to Simon Howe. It’s a steady climb across the moor with views to either side. We then continue across the moor to Wardle Green where we follow a track through the woods before making our way across Howl Moor and on to Scar Wood. Owing to the crumbling path along West Beck stream we will take the recommended diversion along New Wath Scar. When we reach the steps down to Mallyan Spout there will be an option for walkers to either go down to the waterfall or go back along the road.

For those walkers that decide to go down to Mallyan Spout waterfall there are steep steps down and once you reach the waterfall it is quite slippery, and the sting in the tail is that there is quite a steep climb back, which is very good underfoot, up to the Mallyan Spout Hotel. Once we reach the hotel then it’s a short walk back along the road to the car park.
